The International Research Group on Charophytes
(IRGC) was founded as a non-profit organisation during the
1st International Symposium on
Extant and Fossil Charophytes held in Montpellier, France,
in 1989. To date, the IRGC enlists 130 members from 31 countries
from five continents.
Purpose and aims
- To promote and coordinate international co-operation on
charophyte research, including living and fossil specimens
from all geological ages,
- To encourage the integration and synthesis of all aspects
of botanical and palaeobotanical studies related to Charophytes
sensu Charales,
- To encourage the exchange of knowledge and discussion
between researchers of all disciplines,
- To enhance co-operation with other organisations interested
in Phycology and Palaeobotany, and
- To provide an international forum for discussion by the
organisation every 4 years of international meetings (please

newly established charophyte-L (please link to charophyte-L
under news) (list for discussion on charophytes and related
issues).
Administration
The IRGC is administrated by an Executive Committee,
elected every four year by General Assembly of its members.
During the 4th Symposium of the IRGC, Australia 2004, the
